I'm so happy to be with Leslie!!! We always manage to have a great time together!
In the last three years I have spent more time with her than with anybody else. We carpooled all three years of grad school and we have managed not to get on each other's nerves!!! We are both VERY different, i have my strengths and she has hers, but we compliment each other beautifully.

We are the kind of friends that when riding together there is no need of music in the car because we just never run of things to say to each other. Today we drove for hours, 10.5hrs to be exact, and the whole day we were laughing and having a great time.

To get to the White Shark Diving in Gansbaii we decided to take the pretty scenic route down the coast on R43/44 instead of the more direct N2. We are so glad we did! The view was beyond amazing! We wanted to stop the car every couple hundred meters and admire the beauty that was in front of our eyes!

One of our favorite stops was Betty's bay penguin colony!!! We saw hundreds of penguins in the wild,  my favorite ones were the fury penguins who are loosing their baby feathers! They were super cute! Some of the penguins were kissing, some others were cleaning their babies, it was spectacular to see how they behave!

After looking at the penguins we hit the road again; this time on our way to Kleinmond where we were supposed to have a light lunch. We knew we had 30 mins to eat so we could make our appointment for cage diving with sharks.
I love oysters and wanted some but no restaurants had them so we decided to sit at one restaurant and have some soup and appetizers, something that would not take too long. It turned out that the restaurant was too busy and we decided to leave without lunch and since we were 20 mins away once we got there we could get lunch! But oh surprise! The place we were going was 50 mins away and not 20!!!

My mom always says "El tiempo de Dios es perfecto" (God's time is perfect) and today that was super clear to us. Everything worked out perfectly! The fact that we couldn't get food allowed us to get to the place we were going right on time. The fact that we decided to take R43/44 and not N2 was perfect because there was an accident and we wouldn't have made it!

So... Shark cage!!!! If you know me you know that one of the things that I HATE the most is the ocean! Everything about it disgusts me... EVERYTHING!... So this activity pushed my limits all the way! But i couldn't let Leslie do it by herself and in a way I felt as if I could manage it!

First of all I might be the pickiest when it comes to cleanliness so the fact that I had to put an already wet wetsuit that many people have worn throughout the day on me was disgusting. Then I really don't like the ocean because in my head I believe that is full of $h!t... Literally... So the fact that the guys from the boat were throwing seafood sludge over our heads to attract sharks was beyond my comfort zone!

I put my big girl panties... Or wetsuit... On and I went with confidence into the 13 degrees water. To be honest it was a cool experience! I got to see sharks right in front of my eyes!!! Some of the sharks even hit the cage which scared all of us!
I tried to let go of all the thoughts telling me how disgusting the whole situation was and embraced this bizarre experience!

The boat ride wasn't smooth sailing, I got extremely sea sick and it was so cold that I couldn't feel my toes for about two hours!!!

It was quite an experience to say the least but as I told the crew members "never again!"... This was a ONCE in a lifetime experience!!!"

  1. Hola Andrea and Leslie! Wonderful to see your smiling faces.
    Andrea,
What a fantastic adventure. I'm so glad you're writing it all down. Some day you'll be so glad you did. In 2005/2006, I traveled for 13 months never spending more then ten nights in one place at one time. I will never forget the amazing adventures I had, and your stories bring it all alive again!
